Shop Update: Black, White, Pink, Grey and Red

1930s French beaded silk purse

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays!! I'm very slowly coming out of Christmas hibernation mode to get some new listings up in the shop. I took out my needle and thread this afternoon to tackle Elly Maggy Vintage's ever-growing mending pile and prepared lots of fresh pieces to be photographed. I'm looking forward to sharing them very soon!

In the meantime, I hope you like this latest update, featuring a collection of 30s, 40s and 70s gems. As usual, click on the links to shop the Etsy listings...

Winter inspiration

It's very nearly the shortest day of the year here in the U.K. and the early sunsets mean I'm just about ready to fall asleep at 4 o'clock! With the long nights, there's been less time for outdoors-walking and more time for armchair-festering... But I've been trying to put the long evenings to good use by researching the history behind forthcoming shop items and tweaking a new online Elly Maggy Vintage project... More news on that in the New Year!

I've also been spending more time over on Pinterest, browsing pretty pins and putting together this winter-themed ideas board. I hope these vintage images cheer up your December evening!

Vintage cocktails + a mid-century home bar collection

1950s atomic shot glasses set

It has been a while since I've listed anything in the homewares section of the shop but I just couldn't resist adding these super sweet mid-century drinkware sets... Bought together, they make a pretty cool instant home bar collection!

1950s gold grapevine tumblers
I love the gold frosted grapevine tumblers and quirky atomic shot glasses... but the star of the show has to be the cocktail recipe coasters!

Mid-century cocktail recipe coasters
As always, you can click on the captions to shop the collection on Etsy. And, in case you're itching to re-create some mid-century mixed drinks, I wanted to share the full recipes with you here on the blog:

Brandy Toddy
1 and a 1/2 oz brandy
1 teaspoonful granulated sugar
hot water to taste
nutmeg

Rob Roy (Scotch Manhattan)
2/3 Scotch
1/3 vermouth
3 dashes of angostura

Singapore Sling
1-oz dry gin
3/4" cherry brandy
1/2" dash lemon juice
3 dashes of angostura
teaspoonful of granulated sugar

White Lady
2/3 dry gin
1/3 cointreau
lemon juice

Tom Collins
dry gin
juice of half a lemon
soda water and ice
powdered sugar

Dry Martini
2/3 dry gin
1/3 dry vermouth
twist of lemon peel

I'm definitely intrigued by the Rob Roy! Manhattans have to be my all-time favourite mid-century cocktail... I like mine served with a cherry and plenty of orange peel. If you give any of these mixes a try, be sure to let me know in the comments below!

Shop Update: Two Dresses and Grey Skies

1930s embroidered sheer maxi dress with lace trim collar and puff sleeves
There have been grey skies over the U.K. these past few weeks, both literally and metaphorically. Politically, it's been a distractingly turbulent time and, weather-wise, it's been pretty much completely clouded over for most of the end of June / start of July. With gloomy skies overhead, it's been trickier than I'd hoped to post new listings in the shop... Still, I managed to find a short burst of sun last week and took photos of these two dresses, both now available on Etsy. I'm waiting for the (meteorological) clouds to lift (...the others look like they'll take much longer) and then I'll be back outside with my camera... I've got some really nice 1930s pieces that I'm excited to share and then I'll be off on the hunt for new vintage gems.

I'm a wee bit delayed posting the shop's most recent update... These pieces all hit the store over the past week or so... and one has already found a new home! But better late than never, I hope!

Looking ahead, there's going to be a small shipping delay in the shop in the coming week but then I'll be listing lots of new pieces spanning the '30s to the '80s. There'll be some great abstract prints, pretty florals and... not one but two gold skirt sets!!

M&S Archive

A little while back, I sold this 90s midi denim skirt to the archive of British retailer, Marks & Spencer (previously known as St Michael and often abbreviated to M&S here in the U.K.). Most of the time, I sell directly to customers so orders to designers, costumers and companies always stand out a little! Fast forward eight months and M&S has just launched a special 'archive' collection with pieces re-designed and re-issued from their back catalogue. There's no denim skirt in the current crop... but the skirt is now featured in their online database and, who knows, maybe it'll be resurrected in the next archive collection?!

I regularly choose M&S pieces for Elly Maggy Vintage... in fact, there are a couple in the shop right now, including the shirt and dress pictured above. Older St Michael garments from the 40s-60s typify British mid-century style with bright, beautiful novelty prints while their more recent pieces are classic, easy-to-wear and frequently very nicely made, even up until the 1990s ...before the company shifted away from the unionised British garment industry to today's 'fast fashion' style of manufacturing.

The new archive collection made me think how great Etsy is as an archive in itself - a brilliant place for finding the true 'originals' and buying them ethically and often at a snip of current high street prices! So, I've started a little Pinterest board bringing together some favourite pieces from Etsy and elsewhere on the web. Feel free to follow the board... and share links to your favourite vintage St Michael pieces in the comments below. I'd love to see!
